Virtual Pride Week

June 30, 2020

Hey Internautes,

This weekend was pride weekend, normally a time of fun and outdoors. Except of course this is 2020 and clearly Madame Rona has other plans for us.

After watching a rather choppy digital parade in my pants at home, it got me thinking. Since we’re all basically stuck behind a screen for a while longer (and don’t you think we ain’t gonna have none of that second wave, y’all clearly didn’t learn from 1918) we can all make our place in a digital way.

So the renaming of the servers began today, after I caught back my old domain mmn.lgbt that I bought some time ago, let lapse, and some how it was never squatted on. I had so many good plans for that domain that never happened, but today, that changed. I’ve always been jumping from one service domain to another, not really liking the name of them as I go, but I think even with my fickle self this one will stick. For you see with every email, a little gay splashes into your inbox even if you don’t realise it.

I don’t have as many servers as I used to, but with Geomyidae needing a full refresh (thank again Ubuntu) I need to solidify my naming convention. I’ve stolen a format from a large ISP back in the day (you know exactly who you are, pls don’t sue) and I’m going with this :

For main servers CORE is the prefix, middlemen AIR, external RLY / OUT depending on what it do, then  « - » followed by LLLNN on the subdomain SERVICE (mail, web, news, gph, etc) .mmn.lgbt.

Some of the servers aren’t yet properly named, I did this on the fly as usual, but for new Geomyidae I’d be looking at :

core-cnx30.gph.mmn.lgbt

It’s worth mentioning, the gods of a random number and letter generator get the choice in the LLLNN jam.

Personally, I like it, it shows me in pure mundane normality. In fact I also switched over my micro.blog to the domain.

Other than that, I rebought the old Synchro.net BBS domain name I had mid 2000s before all these new ass gTLDs came around, mmn.name.

I also started to resurrect an old plan of mine for a local USENET server, an install of Leafnode pulling feeds from various places for the BBS helped a lot here, and I also found FUDForum which I used to slap the frontend up at communityware.ca. With this I grabbed back gayyouth.ca a project I’ve been in and out of for a while now, well, here I’m back in.

And there you go, that is what I’ve been up to. Other than dragging my feet at bringing across various domains to the new mail server of course.

Side note, I was side tracked while writing this, and I’m tired so I expect the grammar, spallings, and all other things to be a bit weird.

Now to send the VM in to a near crash with uploading all hundred million articles hosted here at mmn.on.ca.
